Pride and Prejudice Summary :

Pride and Prejudice is a social novel by Jane Austen who was an eminent novelist of 19th century English literature. The present novel deals with the story of a Bennet family. This is the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet with their five unmarried daughters. They lived in the state of Longbourn, a rural district of London. The financial condition of the family was not good. Mr. Bennet was only a male earning member in th family who was much loving caring and responsible father for his all the five daughters. He was much anxious for the marriage of his daughters. Settlement and marriage of all the daughters was a great challenge for Mr. Bennet as he was not financially bold. Five daughters of Mr. Bennet were Jane, Elizabeth, Marry, Kitty and Lydia. All the five daughters were opposite from each other in nature and attitude.

Jane was the eldest daughter of Mr. Bennet who was extremely beautiful. Elizabeth was the second daughter who was much intelligent and clever of all his five daughters. She handles the odd situations of the family and often helps her father. The third daughter Mary was bookish. The fourth daughter of Mr. Bennet was Kitty who was childish and immature. Lydia was the youngest of all the daughters who was wild in nature therefore it was difficult for Mr. and Mrs. Bennet to handle them and fulfill their demands and wishing.

Once, Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy came to reside in the neighborhood of Mr. Bennet. The eldest daughter of Mr. Bennet Jane fell in love with Mr. Bingley. She was impressed with his personality and income. She wanted to marry Mr. Bingley as he was not only handsome but also wealthy. In fact, Bennet family wanted to settle all the daughters in big family in order to provide them financial security in future. Mrs. Bennet was also ready with the proposal of her eldest daughter Jane. Elizabeth was also impressed with the attitude of Mr. Darcy in the beginning but later her opinion got changed due to low living standard of Darcy but Darcy had positive opinion about Elizabeth forever. In the beginning Darcy criticized Elizabeth but later he was impressed by her and wanted to marry her. Darcy proposed Elizabeth to get marry with him but she rejected his proposal due to his pride though she was impressed with him in the beginning.

Here Jane and Bingley were engaged in a courtship that occupies a central place in the novel. Jane and Bingley were very similar in nature and behavior. Both were cheerful, friendly and good natured. They had always well wishes about others. There was no place of egotism like the Darcy and Elizabeth in the nature of Jane and Bingley. They also wanted the relationship of Elizabeth and Darcy which was in a great conflict due to Pride and Prejudice.

On the other hand Mr. Collins, a young clergyman wants to marry a girl of bennet family in order to inherit Mr. Bennet's property. He makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth. The pride of Mr. Collins stood broken as Elizabeth denies his proposal. Later it came into light that Elizabeth's best friend, Charlotte Lucas got married with Mr. Collins being compelled by her poverty and growing age. Later it also came into light that Lydia, the youngest daughter of Mr. Bennet ran away with an army officer Wickham. This news made a great emotional situation in the family of Elizabeth. Mr. Bennet tried enough to look for Lydia but got failed. Darcy managed to look for Lydia and married couple come back home. Finally Bennet family accepted the married couple.

Darcy was in fact in fact a man of pride but he was not bad at heart. He also thought well about Bennett family. He managed to to look for Lydia and Wickham even after he was avoided by Elizabeth. By his positive and Co-operative nature, he provided his intention and goodness in the eyes of Elizabeth and finally impressed her at the end of the story. The Love Story of Elizabeth and Darcy added a romantic end and they got married.

Gradually but eventually Elizabeth comes to realize the nobility of Darcy's character and the error of her initial prejudice against him. In this way three daughters of Bennet family got settled and rest two we left in the responsibilities of three unmarried couple to settle in future. Mr. Bennett got a great relief in his life with his family at last.
