Jane Austen's Biography

Jane Austen : was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels : 'Pride and Prejudice, 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Susan', 'Mansfield Park', Emma', and the sixth novel was 'Persuasion'.

Jane Austen was one of the famous female novelist of early 19th century. Her contribution to the English literature is notable and remarkable. She was born on 16th Dec, 1775. She was a daughter of a clergyman named George Austen. She had one sister and six brothers. She was a talented girl since her childhood. She started her literary career very early, only at the age of 20 completing her schooling. She was much fond of writing since her childhood. She wrote a number of short stories during her school days. 

First novel of Jane Austen was "Pride and Prejudice" completed at the age of 21, published in 1813 which was written in 1796-97 originally called "First Impressions".  In the next year she wrote her second novel  "Sense and Sensibility" in its present narrative form. She wrote her third novel "Susan" in 1798 - 99 which was published as "Northanger Abbey" in 1817. She wrote only half a dozen novels but gained a high position in the field of English novels as the pure novelist for her outstanding art and excellent style as well as unique technique. Three more novels by Jane Austen written between 1811 and 1816 are: Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion.

Jane Austen has aimed to highlight the real picture of English society through her novel. She has presented what she experienced residing in her society in realistic manners. Her novels are domestic comedies of high order. All her stories represent personal relationship, between friend  and friend, between parents and children, between man and women in love. In all her novels she skill fully introduced the domestic life in country villages. Therefore her novels are cast in the form of the comedy of manners. 

In "Pride and Prejudice" she tells the story of Bennet family with five daughters. Her novels are based on day to day life events. She focused on the social issues of the English society during her age. Her novels were beyond deep emotions characters produced in the novel by Austen are living, realistic and virtuous. She has never created unfair characters in her novels. Jane Austen has created her female characters more skillfully than that of her male characters. The central themes of her most novels are love in the life of woman. Her female characters are inspiring and having good morals therefore she is considered as the novelist of feminine sensibility. Heroine of her novels are Elizabeth, Emma, Anne etc. dominate in her novels and introduces the central theme of her novel. Love and marriage are as important elements of Jane Austen 's novels. 

As a whole we can say, Jane Austen occupies a high place in the field of English novel even after she lived short life. She provided realism to English novel. There is one thing unique in her art that she introduced dramatic elements with comic touch in her novels. Jane Austen died on the 18th July 1817, only at the age of 41.
