Q.1. From where did the Peddler get the idea of the world being a rattrap?
Ans: One day peddler had fallen into a line of thought that the whole world about him- The whole world with its land and seas, it's cities and villages was nothing but a big rattrap. It offered riches and joy, food and shelter, heat and clothing, and as soon as anyone let himself be tempted it closed in on him. 

Q.2. Why was he amused by this idea?
Ans: The peddler was amused by the idea of world being a rattrap because the world had never been kind to him. So it gave him unwonted joy to thikm ill of it in this way. It became a cherished pastime of his, during many dreary ploddings, to think of people he knew who had let themselves be caught in the dangerous snare, and of others who were still circling around the bait. 

Q.3. Did the Peddler expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the Crofter?
Ans: No. The peddler did not expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the Crofter. When he went to Crofter's cottage asking for shelter the peddler thought he would meet sour face as usual. But the owner of that cottage was happy to see him to talk to in his loneliness. He him supper. They both enjoyed tabacco and then played 'majölis' until bedtime.

Q.4. Why was the Crofter so talkative and friendly with the Peddler?
Ans: The Crofter was so talkative and friendly with the Peddler because he was living alone in the cottage. He neither had a wife nor a child. When Peddler knocked the door he was glad to get someone to talk to in his loneliness. The Peddler was supprred. They played cards and mjölis. 

Q.5. Why did he show the thirty kroner to the Peddler?
Ans: When the Crofter told the peddler thay last month he had received all of thirty knroner in payment, the peddler must have seemed incredulous therefore the Crofter show the thirty knroner to the peddler.

Q.6. Did the Peddler respect the confidence reposed in him by the Crofter?
Ans: No. The peddler didn't respect the confidence reposed in him by the Crofter. He was a theif. As he got an opportunity to steal the thirty kronor he took the money without any delay and flew away towards the high way.

Q.8. What made Peddler think that he had indeed fallen into a rattrap? 
Ans: After theivering the thirty knroners of the Crofter he walked along the forest. He walked and walked without coming to the end of the wood, and finally he realised that he had only been walking around in the same part of the forest. All at once he recalled his thoughts about the world and the rattrap. Then he realised that he had fallen into a rattrap. He had let himself be fooled by a bait and had been caught. 

Q.9. Why did the ironmaster kindly speak to the Peddler and invite him home?
Ans: The ironmaster speak kindly call to the peddler and invite him to his home because he thought that the peddler was his old friend whose name was Captain Von Stahle, who used to work in the regiment. 

Q.10. Why did the Peddler decline the invitation?
Ans: Actually there are two main reasons due to which the Peddler declined the iron master's invitation: 

First, the Peddler was not ironmaster's friend Captain Von Stahle, so he feared to go to the house. 

Second, the Peddler had thirty kroner of thievery so he thought that to go up to the manor would be like throwing himself into a lion's den. 

Q.11. What made the Peddler accept Edla Willmanson's invitation? 
Ans: Miss Elda Eillmanson assured the Peddler that he would be allowed to leave them just as freely as he would go. Thus, her friendly  manner made the Peddler to accept her invition to enjoy the Christmas evening with them. 

Q.12. What doubt did Edla have about the Peddler?
Ans: Edla had doubt about the Peddler that either he had stolen something or else he had escaped from from jail because of which he was afraid. 

Q.13. When did the ironmaster realise his mistake?
Ans: The ironmaster realised his mistake in the next morning when the Peddler was cleaned and we'll dressed. The valet had bathed him, cut his hair and shaved him. The ironmaster looked at him with puckered brow, and it was easy to understand he made a mistake in recognising him the last night. But in the following morning he saw him in the broad daylight so it was impossible to mistake him for an old acquaintance. 

Q.14. What did the Peddler say in his defence when it was clear that he was not the person the iron master had thought he was?
Ans: When it was clear that he was not the person the ironmaster had thought he was, he justified his innocence by explaining that it was not his fault. He never pretendent to be anything but a poor trader and he was pleaded and begged to be allowed to stay in the forge. Further he explained them that no harm has been done. At worst he can put on his rags again and go  away. 

Q.15. Why did Edla still entertain the Peddler even after she knew the truth about him? 
Ans: Edla did not think it proper on their part to chase away a human being whom they had asked to come to their house and had promised him Christmas cheer. She understood the reality of the peddler’s life and wanted him to enjoy a day of peace with them. Hence, she still entertained the peddler even after knowing the truth about him.

Q.16. Why was Edla happy to see the gift left by the Peddler? 
Ans: As soon as Edla opened the package of the gift, the contents came into view. She found a small rattrap with three wrinkled ten kronor notes and a letter addressed to her. The peddler wanted to be nice in return as she had been so nice to him all day long. He did not want her to be embarrased at the Christmas season by a thief.

Q.17. Why did the Peddler sign himself as Captain Von Stahle?
Ans: The ironmaster has invited the peddler to his house mistaking him for Captain von Stahle. He was welcomed there and looked after as captain even after the reality became known. The peddler got a chance to redeem himself from dishonest ways by acting as an honourable Captain.
