Charles Dickens : was an English writer and social critic who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the victorian era.

Charles Dickens was a famous novelist of the 19th century which is considered to be the Victorian age in the history of English literature. He was born on the 7th Feb 1812 at Landport, England. His father John Dickens was a clerk in Navy pay office. His mother was Elizabeth Barrow Dickens. She was a school teacher. In spite of his parents were educated and job holders they remained in financial crisis. John Dickens had in fact, 10 children in two marriages. John Dickens was arrested in the charge of heavy debt when Charles Dickens was only 12 years old and they were compelled to move to camden Town, a poor neighborhood in London. Being compelled by the situation Charles Dickens had to leave the school and engage in works during the early period of his life. Charles Dickens had to struggle hard in his life. 

Dickens was regarded as a great social reformer. He wanted to bring about a rapid change in English society. In fact, English society was struggling against a number of social conflicts during the Victorian age. Dickens wanted to uplift the society in every field of life through his inspiration and skillful creations. He insisted on the social issues in his creations in order to present the real picture of the society during the 19th century. 19th century was the time when lower class struggled to obtain its desired status in the society. It was in fact, the age of transformation.

Charles Dickens played an important role in the reformation of the society through his innovative creations in literature. Novels of Dickens are based on the social issues and domestic life. "David Copperfield" is a fine example of social and psychological novel based on the domestic life. In the present novel he has highlighted the real picture of a poor boy and his struggle in English society. This novel represents the life of Charles Dickens as the story of the present novel is based on his autobiography. The novelist has also attacked on the evil of child labur in this novel. In tact, Dickens had a great love and sympathy for the children in the society. Dickens was much fascinated with children and this novel examines in detail how children are treated in the society.

 The life of Charles Dickens was full of struggles and sufferings. His childhood was full of pain and scarcity. He was a deprived child in English society. He himself experienced a number of social problems in his life. He got success eventually but he had to struggle hard in every stage of his life. His writing style was simple and perfect. "The tale of Two Cities" is a well known novel of Dickens written in simple and straightforward language liked by the reader too much. This is one of his inspirable novel in many ways highlighting the French revolution. Dickens is also a great novelist of realism as he has exposed various evils of social and industrial revolution. He has exposed contemporary problems of English society like education, child labor, riots, strike, crimes and social justice. 

Charles Dickens was a remarkable novelist as he achieved incredible popularity as a novelist only at the age of 25. His early novels "Pickwick" and "Nicholas Nickleby" got huge success in English society. " Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist" were also famous novels of Dickens. "Hard Times" is also a social protest novel portrays the tough times of lower class of British of society. Dickens was a novelist with purpose from the first to the last. He also loved to write melodrama. As a social reformer he loved humanism and reformation of the society and his contribution in this regard is notable. For above greatness as a novelist he occupies a high position among rest of the writers of the century. As a whole we find Charles Dickens as a social reformer more than that of a novelist.
